The Centre International de la Mer (International Center of the Sea) invitesyou to the Ropery, its multiple attractions and other nearby locations to visit. You will find here informations on the different places as well as an Q&A for you to see. The Royal Ropery offers you the opportunity to visit using an audio-guide (for free !).






Ropery

A visit to the ropery will first allow you to discover its history and purpose in the Arsenal since its construction in 1666 by king Louis XIV thanks to an 18 minutes long immersive audiovisual performance.
Following this, you’ll be able to discover our permanent exhibition as well as the temporary one.




Permanent exhibition

The permanent exhibition will turn you into an rope expert! From the cultivation of the raw material to its final transformation, you’ll discover the different works and activities that were necessary for the good functioning of the Ropery’s activity through different experiences awakening the senses: touch manipulations, image projections, edutainment machines…

Temporary exhibition 2024

Current exhibition: Panta rhei exhibition [Everything flows]* (10 February 2024 – 05 January 2025)

By combining science and poetry, plastic artist Hicham Berrada draws his inspiration from the shapes of nature. He takes here the mineral as a subject of study, an inert material whose slow alteration and metamorphosis escape our gaze and our temporality. The works presented, a video triptych and a series of five resins, invite you to observe, contemplate and dream.

Restaurant Les Longitudes

Next to the Ropery, this building with arches used to serve as a guard room to shelter soldiers who were keeping watch over the arsenal. The restaurant offers an original lunch menu all year round (with regional dishes, seafood, etc).

Gift shop

An invitation to escape through the theme of the sea, voyages or the navy.
Open the door  and you’ll be able to find gifts and souvenirs for a small price. Here, the maritime spirit is in everyone’s reach: table art, clothes, jewelry, small items or furniture, paintings and souvenirs made by our seamen in the Ropery.




Maritime bookshop

Designed in the shape of a boat’s hull under construction, the Maritime Bookshop has a unique collection of 5 000 titles, covering all types of maritime works : from books for young people to specialists reviews, not forgetting art books, poetry, comics, History books, etc.
The Maritime Bookshop welcomes many visitors each year and attracts a wide range of people from visitors desiring to find out more about the Royal Ropery to keen readers of ocean literature.






L’Hermione (not present in 2024)
Embark on the replica of the famous frigate for a visit. The original L’Hermione ship was built in 1779 and became famous when she ferried General Gilbert de Motier, Marquis de la Fayette, to the United-States in 1780 to support the Americans in their War of Independence against Great Britain. Its replica’s creation started in 1997 and ended in 2012. The frigate L’Hermione started her sea worthiness trials in 2014 and made her maiden voyage to the United-States in 2015.

The “Accro-mâts”
Unique in Europe ! The first urban adventure park built in the double dry dock « Louis XV ».
The “Accro-mâts” is a recreational area where you can climb high on and between the masts, in total autonomy. A 30 meters high acrobatic course!
